Had to reformat the desktop. I hope there is a circle in Hell for 'Guard Online' - even if it is built just for them.

After the reformat, loaded Win7 [since I'd been planning to upgrade] ... and the dozens of other programs I require for happy computing. It's going to take at least a week. [sighs]

I am totally sympathetic. Now you know why I use clone backups, even though it's expensive and time-consuming to have three hard drives for every one I'm actually using. (That's two rotating backups in case the first one fails, which has happened.) Popping a clone into place of the main drive is a pain, but it's still faster than reinstalling the system and applications.

OTOH, I still don't know if my current unpleasantness has gone away. The laptop booted when I got home to Fremont, but it's at the point now where every time I power up the machine is a nervous moment.

[nodding here] Yeah, I'm lucky this happened 3 days after I'd backed up files - but it's all the flipping -programs- I hadn't thought about. [offers an internet cookie and cocoa in mutual sympathy]
