The reason British people talk about the weather all the damn time is that two weeks ago I got hailed on, yesterday was hot enough that I sweated through my clothes, and today there's haar stopping me seeing more than 100m.

Last Friday ever of dropping her off at school and him off at nursery!

Off to the Highland Show this afternoon. Going to be 28 degrees, so we'll all probably burst into flames.

Dad update

Finally got to talk to Dad, yay! He's doing okay. Well, except for the part where "I can work in the yard for about 10 minutes, and then I have to rest for 45", and his cardiologist says, "Recovery is a process, Bob, and there's no definitive timeline". Which, sure, that makes sense, but he had the cardioversion at the end of March, so I'm a little dubious. Dad sees the cardiologist next week, and I told him to feel free to gently threaten the cardiologist with having to talk to me, and I'm a lot meaner than my Dad.

But things are going okay for him and his Ladylove. They are currently a household with no kitties, as Sniggle passed on a few months ago. Dad says he's been able to resist looking at kittens so far, but he'll probably give in soon.

Hilariously, he lectured me about looking after myself, then realized what he was saying. In that pause I said, "Gosh, I wonder where I learned THAT from", and he had the grace to laugh. I told him I'd try to be better if he did. We'll see how that goes.

Ridiculous sewing project

This is something I've been thinking about for a few years, and I've finally decided to try it. I had the Madwoman in the Attic make a version of these "pants" in black lawn. I'm going to sew layers of black organza ruffle trim (the good stuff with fishing line in the hem to make the ruffles nigh-uncrushable) up to the knees on each leg. If my theory is right, then I will have a pair of long bloomers that are also a petticoat!

I will, of course, report back on how this works.

Thankful Thursday

Today I am thankful for...

  • My keyboard arriving last Friday without any problems. NO thanks to FedEx, which has failed to deliver m's keyboard to their home in Seattle. Twice.
  • Remembering a very little bit of how to sight-read.
  • Finally solving my audio input problem. NO thanks to Zoom and Audacity, which fail in entirely orthogonal ways to sanely handle my UA-25.
  • Thanks to them, however, for at least allowing the system default as a device. Differently, of course.
  • Linux command-line tools, including (but not limited to) Grep, Find, Ls, Sed, and of course Bash, for always being there when I need to do some trivial but off-the-wall bit of data-mining. Like listing all Thankful Thursday posts with fewer than four list items.
    $ for f in ../2*/*/*thank*; do echo $(grep "li>" $f | wc -l) $f; done |grep ^[2-3]
      3 ../2019/09/12--thankful-thursday.html
      3 ../2020/06/05--thankful-friday.html
      3 ../2020/06/25--thankful-thursday.html
      3 ../2021/04/25--thankful-sunday.html
      3 ../2022/02/24--thankful-thursday.html
      2 ../2025/01/03--thankful-thursday-addendum.html
      2 ../2025/06/12--thankful-thursday.html

NO thanks to 2025!me for continued procrastination., and NO thanks to 2022!me, for letting the MakeStuff/music toolchain languish with no maintenance and inadequate documentation, making it way harder than necessary to put a two-song concert set online. Which might get done this week.

hey team north end!

Today’s Tuesday. There’s a Tuesday protest, Lynnwood, Tesla dealership on 99. 4:15pm TODAY, like usual. As I’m writing, that’s literally an hour and like 20 minutes away.

Yeah I kinda forgot too lol, but no reprieves for the fascist.

Let’s get out there~~~

Ken: A big movie announcement came out last week. Mel Brooks has listened to the fans, but has decided to make a second Spaceballs movie – due out in 2027. Rick Moranis is coming out of retirement to don the Dark Helmet. The Schwartz Awakens! spaceballs.fandom.com/wiki/Spaceballs_2

Reviews

Yochanan: The Tempest (SVShakes) Amazing. Framed as a D&D campaign. Some gender play. Great costumes. Funding cuts made them drop the Thursday show. Free to get in, but it could cost you to get out… svshakespeare.org
and he reviewed = Daredevil (not Born Again) (D+) Charlie Cox as Daredevil. Really enjoyed. 13 episodes x 3 seasons. Very interesting. Recommend. Muddles through season two, but worth it for season three. Best if before Daredevil Born Again. Strong plot, but character driven. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daredevil_(TV_series)
and he reviewed = Time: A Traveller’s Guide by Clifford A Pickover (an actual scientist). Short science-fiction stories, prefaced by a quote and Chopin music. Lots of science explaining time-travel, as a scientist is traveling back to see Chopin with his student. A bit dense, scientific. Didn’t not like it, but didn’t love it. sprott.physics.wisc.edu/pickover/time1.htm

Rick: The Outpost (CW/SyFy) 49 episodes. Recommended by a friend as worth watching. Featherweight fantasy (he was also a fan of Xena). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Outpost_(TV_series)

Rumor of the Week: A belated happy father’s day to the paternal and not so paternal BASFAns.

Let’s talk “Remigration”

Jun. 16th, 2025 09:15 am
solarbird: (korra-on-the-air)

Farty McShitgibbon squirted out another racist authoritarian shart on Pravda Sotsialnaya late Sunday night, blowing off steam caused by his frustration at protests and over his shitty birthday parade. It’s a screed of lies about Democrats being sick in the head and not actually Americans, sending more waves of cops and military at us, and about cheering on mass deportations. Like y’do, if you’re a fascist fuckhead.

But let’s pay particular attention to this bit:

…I have directed my entire Administration to put every resource possible behind this effort, and reverse the tide of Mass Destruction Migration that has turned once Idyllic Towns into scenes of Third World Dystopia. Our Federal Government will continue to be focused on the REMIGRATION of Aliens to the places from where they came…

CAPS as in the original. Bold added.

Remigration pretends to be but is not actually a subtle word.

Remigration means ethnic purge. Ethnic cleansing, if you insist – but I hate that term, because there’s nothing cleansing about it. It’s an ethnic purge. It’s violent, it’s bloody, it’s repression, it’s expulsion at the point of a gun, based on your ethnicity.

Remigration means ancestry-based expulsions of people who aren’t white, for being not white, and not for any other reason. Just for being not white. Legal status means nothing; being a citizen means nothing. Not white? Get the fuck out, at gunpoint. That’s how it went during Operation W*tback; that’s how he wants it to go again, and now he’s just saying it.

This is not a question; this is not up for debate. If you feel like debating it with me, screw you you fascist-apologist fuck, and sit the fuck down. In this context – in any context outside academia – that’s what it means. Go read Wikipedia if you want the definition and history.

“Remigration” in this context absolutely and only means ethnic purge. All the leading haters in his administration – Miller, I’m looking in your direction – know damn well what it means. They used the word on purpose.

So I’m asking you not to discuss this shart of a statement without going directly to what REMIGRATION means. Do not let anyone lie and pretend it means something else, because that’s bullshit. Remigration is why they’re revoking every legal status they can; remigration is why they’re trying to end birthright citizenship; remigration means a violent ethnic purge.

And that’s what he’s told ICE – or more generally, “ICE, FBI, DEA, ATF, the Patriots at Pentagon and the State Department” – to make happen.

So. What do we do, in particular, right now?

First off, make sure people know what this word means.

Second – know any “good cops”? Like, relatives or something you might actually be able to reach? Show them the Wikipedia article about what “remigration” means, and only then show them Trump’s statement. Make sure they understand what Trump said, and make sure they know what they’re being asked to do. Make them understand, like… now.

Make sure they understand the criminal act they’re being asked to perform.

Because that is, absolutely, the ask, and “just following orders” … just won’t do.

A word you need to know right now

I’ve got a post going up tomorrow (Monday) morning, but the word you need to understand right now is:

Remigration

If you don’t already know this word – or if you’re in certain areas of academia and think you do, but do not in any context outside academia – you need to know what this word means right now. And you need to make sure your friends know what it means.

Wikipedia will explain it to you.

More tomorrow.

Done Since 2025-06-08

I think this was one of those weeks that makes me want to give up on trying to characterize my week. It wasn't particularly good, it wasn't particularly bad, I didn't get a whole lot done, the US had a lot of mostly-peaceful No Kings" demonstrations, but it also had political assassinations in Minnesota alongside other symptoms of its slide into fascism.

Last Sunday was the 23rd anniversary of this blog's founding, back on LJ. Today is the 27th Father's Day since my Dad's death in February of 1999, and I've been kind of wrecked since Thursday. The keyboard I ordered on Tuesday arrived Friday; it's flawed but will do what we need it to. The one I ordered for m has not arrived yet. I may have the start of a toothache.

Thursday was my first, and so far only, Thankful Thursday post ever with only two items. Since then, both of my kids wished me a happy Father's Day, so next week should have at least that many. I had a blood tests and a CT scan done last week, but I won't get to talk with a doctor about them until tomorrow.

See what I mean?

Here -- give a listen to the recordings of my and m's 2-song "set" at DFDF two weeks ago. In keeping with the theme of the week, the first verse and a half of Millennium's Dawn got cut off thanks to technical difficulties.
