learning...
Jan. 24th, 2005 12:44 amOK, found a way to upload an icon. Still no clue about text size.
Have spent the last 3 days reading live journal reports about FC and taking notes on how to make FC 06 better. Profoundly embarassed about the bad time some folks had.
I sure wish -now- that I'd known something about ... name the main stage event and I did know. Never had been to an FC dance before; didn't know what Iron Artist was, never had heard of '2'; never BID on an art piece, much less attended either FC art auction. [I -had- been to charity auctions, so I had a clue about padding in extra time for THAT - and by inference the regular art auction.]
I didn't know I was supposed to read some folk's minds to know their demands for time -didn't- mean they wanted to -start- at that time [even when I showed them this on my copy of the schedule] -- but that they wanted start up time beginning then. [takes notes for next year]
Didn't know that an early copy of my panel descriptions [marked in the subject line when I sent it out as 'will change; do not publish this'] - would end up in the program book --
--and -definately- wished that the 'pocket program' document sent to me that I edited had been used. Instead it apparently got lost and some other, earlier version of my xl programming was used WITH quite a few panel names horribly cut to fit an approximate 20 character space. If I'd but -known- there was a space constraint for panel title! [sighs again and makes more notes]
REALLY wished that the Social Track lead hadn't fallen off the face of the earth. emails bouncing; never a call from -him-, a fax tone for his work phone # & no answer at his home phone. I'm -worried- and hope he's okay, but sure wish he'd been contactable. Had to do the social track myself a month out and had no contact info for the DJs. Managed to find it just barely in time tho.
Next year Croc is going to do SO much better as Social Lead. He cares about what's being done; how the DJs and attendees are treated. Above all else he can be found, communicated with, -reasoned- with. Wolfwings was a complete trooper too. Met him for the 1st time on Thursday, found out he'd been recruited as Social 2nd last year and then left to dangle and never been contacted, put on staff lists or anything. He worked like heck and was excellent.
All the track leads who -didn't- drop out of sight did their best and I'm impressed at how much they did and how much I learned. AND how much more there was TO be learned. A recurrent theme I've read is that there should be less turnover for FC staff positions and they are SO right about that. Barely have time to learn stuff before the convention and then afterwards so many people either change positions, butn out [I can see why] or have to -move- out of the area!
Gaming was -so- much simpler to take care of.
