2nd ed AD&D fun
Feb. 11th, 2012 10:27 pmThe low-level game was a lot of fun today. The bold adventurers [party of 7: 3rd fighter, 2nd cleric, 2nd cleric-thief, 1st fighter-thief, 1st fighter-bard, 1st bard, 1st cleric] have reached the cave wherein the mad wizard has holed up - sending out his zombie & skeleton minions to intimidate a local village.
The trivially kill 10 zombies [with bad programming - which made only the zombie attacked at range go after its attacker] & enter the cave, killing 4 cave fishers. Seeing that one of the 2 branches of the cave is sealed off with a wall of stone, one cleric makes a spellcraft roll and states the mad mage must be at least level 9. They also note that there is graffiti on the cave walls: 'Zombies love me', 'Mourdant rules' - and on the wall of stone 'Wyvern R bad, they don't love me'.
They go around a 'drop rocks on you' trap - see skeletons past a low fence in one diraction - and really big beetles in the other direction. They retreat back past the trap and the bugs pursue. 3 bug are hurt by rocks [4d6 damage, ST to half], then 2 more empty the trap of rocks rocks [2d6, ST to half]. The group dispatches the 6 4 hit die carrion beetles without taking much damage from the beetle's 3d4 mandible attacks. ...but then I was rolling in front of everyone and at one point, out of 6 attacks, the highest I rolled on the d20 was an '8'. I hit far fewer times than I shoulda.
Exhausting all clerical heal spells, they camp in the cavern - barricaded by dead beetle bodies. 3 shadows are easily dispatched. Much later, at roughly 5am, they fight off 7 giant rats. By dawn all of the 1st level PCs have levelled and are now level 2. It was a delightful game.
