Disarming pomegranates

melcharSince it is THAT time of year [and my mom sent me a box of home-grown pomegranates] - here is the perfect way to 'disarm' a pomegranate so you can do it in your best clothes, without muss.
Fill a cleaned sink with water, deep enough to cover the pomegranate[s]. Take fruit, make a clean cut at the top, cutting into the white pith, but not deep enough to expose seeds. Lightly score outer peel in quarters from the main cut down to its bottom - all around the fruit. Put fruit under water and pry it apart into sections with gentle pressure.
Now that you have sections, remove seeds. Rinse seeds and put them aside in a container. Keeping everything underwater insures that if there is leakage, the pomegranate juice will stay in the sink and not on your clothes. This method also keeps your hands from getting that faint yellow discoloration from the pith.
