Hitchhiker's Guide certainly was entertaining, and in the long run did manage to keep to the spirit of the book even if it deviated in pretty significant ways in the plot. I do wish they'd kept a bit more of Adam's dialog and explanations. Frankly, I was a bit puzzled why they cut some of the sentences they did, when they were the "punch lines" to a joke and wouldn't have added more than a couple seconds to a scene. For instance, they went through the lenghty explanation of the "Babel fish", then cut the line about it starting more wars than anything else in the universe.

Granted, being a visual medium, they had to show things instead of describe them, so we lost several of Adam's gems, like the Vogon construction fleet "...hung in the sky in much the way that bricks don't." But replacing something to the effect of "... a liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea" with "I said it made tea. It just doesn't do it very well." -- I just have to ask myself why the producer thought that second one was funnier.

Still, it beat the HECK out of the Triple X sequel I saw later on in the weekend, and I'd watch it again. And it does seem to be getting some folks interested in going out to read the books, which is a "very good thing".
