The only real non-suck about insomnia and an obsession over news is that I've been watching the overwhelmingly awesome coverage of the 8.9 [EIGHT POINT NINE!] earthquake and multuple tsunami news coverage since 11pm.

I had the opposite experience. Woke up at 11:30pm, turned on the TV and watched Larry the Cable Guy's roast on Comedy Central, and just when the GoH got up to speak Comcast interrupted ALL CHANNELS with an ugly (white text on black background) emergency Tsunami watch alert. This was at 1 am, the warning was for 8 am, and did not apply to me. Pissed me off.

This morning I watched the idiots from the local TV stations showing nothing happening in HMB and Santa Cruz. Switched to CNN and was told California was not due for another couple of hours. And then they showed their usual useless local reporters in Japan (at 2 am Tokyo time) stuck in traffic. Eventually they showed some mind-blowing scenes of Japan tsunami damage from the daylight hours. But they mostly showed "nothing to see here" images of power plants from miles away.

CNN pretty much just showed live feed from Japan from about 11:15 - and helicopter news crews following the tsunami waves that came ashore in Sendai - and followed it inland for more than 50 miles for about 2 full hours. It was the most astonishing coverage.

At 2am they started to repeat the film and divide it up into clip and the newsheads started shoving their faces into screen. Sigh. So I checked and channel 7 ]the world news all night show] was doing some live coverage - same film clips - but they were talking live to a local reporter. That was interesting. At 3 everything started to loop, so I went to bed [KGO radio on, as usual].

Woke at 9am and heard that Santa Cruz took some pier & ship damage - and that part Crescent City was flooded, plus some wave watchers were swept out to sea at around 8am, but that was pretty much it for local news -content-. Coverage is being shown in santitized bits now. SO much less interesting.
