Got my desktop back up and working - with about a $thou of parts upgrades. All told, the only parts kept from the original was the hard drive, monitor, keyboard and mouse ^_^

As in - new case, 16 GB RAM, new motherboard, new CPU, new graphics card.

Ha, my frankendesktop is like that--technically I consider it the same machine I built in 2005, but the only bits that haven't undergone piecemeal replacement are the keyboard, mouse, and speakers. :P

Spoke too soon. I also replaced the keyboard. As for the mouse? I replaced it about 2 months ago. ^_^

Yeah, Riff is a frankendesktop. Great word, BTW! I'm very glad that I have a friend who builds computers as a hobby and who enjoys helping me with mine. *whew*

Everything I know about computer-building, I learned by trial and error. Now I'm the friend who helps other people build/upgrade their machines, but I had some... adventures along the way, including the time I tried to trim cooling rods with pliers to make them fit under a giant video card. That ended poorly. >.>
