other people can be annoying
Jan. 26th, 2005 01:52 pmIf anything eventually burns me out on gaming it WILL be the players, never the game. I've been refereeing since 1973 and the dawn of time [for rpgs] and mostly ref'd at least once a week during all that time. That's a ton of gaming.
Right now I'm doing one 2nd ed AD&D game on Saturdays [where my player complain bitterly about NOT gaming because of FC staff meetings] and an Agris game [home-made rpg that's about 20 years old now] - ref'd about twice a month on Sundays. Then I ref 12 games over the 'net [text/response] at boojum's Warren site.
So now one of the Sunday players is bitching at me - in 7 freaking emails the last 2 days! - about how I'm ruining his gaming life because I have a class I want to go to next Sunday & have a Baycon staff meeting the Sunday after that. So why can't I ref a game the Sunday thereafter? Because THAT one player can't make the game, so I'll inconvenience the -other- 5 players JUST for him. Do I get any credit for that? Nope. I just get complaints. (sighs) Some days it's just not worth reading my inbox.

Wanna sick the doggie on them?
Date: 2005-01-26 10:23 pm (UTC)Seriously, tell them tough turkey, really. Sometimes Melchar time has to come first ranking higher than gamer time. I mean, being one of your Saturday gamers who get screwed out of a lot of games because of FC doesn't give me the right to rant and rave at YOU about game cancellation. Once is one thing, but 6 or 7 times in 2 days is extreme and I wouldn't let it bother you. You are the best GM I have had and the most consistant in story and plot. So don't let ONE squishy apple screw up your apple pie!

3) Easier ways for people to bitch and moan, while not having to face the target of it.
It sounds like this player has forgotten the GM, oddly enough, is a person too, with person-like things which end up nibbling at their time, like a pack of rabid squirrels. Maybe it might make them feel better if they consider it a random encounter. "GM abducted by con staff" or something like that.
I concur on the inbox. I usually end up with roughly five good emails (four of which are generated by my server during maintenance tasks), and a couple hundred spam. Myself, I might almost welcome naggy emails, it'd at least be a change from the deluge of v1agr0ga1ne m0rtgage st0cks skyr0cketing.
BTW, welcome to LJ!
