So what else is new?

OK, so I'm disappointed with the 'episodes 1-3' Star Wars flicks. Fine. But I discovered a new depth of annoyance.

My momn is another Luddite. She has a VCR and does not want a DVD player. One of the gifts she DID ask for was 'Revenge of the Sith'. AHA! thought I - since -everything- else she wanted is exacting, specific and takes visiting a half-dozen stores to find.

And then I learned that Lucas has -refused- to allow 'Ep3' to be released on VHS. WTF? What sort of twisted mind -does- that?

So the ONLY way I can get my mom a prezzie she actually wants is to get the DVD, finds someone with a DVD/VCR player that can -tape- from DVD and do a copy for her that way. And it is thus highly unlikely that I'll be able to give her 'Sith' for Xmas. [sighs]

And DON'T get me started about trying to find 60"x90" rectangular, ivory-colored, all plastic tablecloths [not cloth-backed]!

I knew there were more reasons to hate that movie other than it just being a bad movie.

DVDs -- the wave of the future. I heard someone talking this morning how some stores are not even stocking VCRs any more...and the ones they have are dirt cheap. I'm kicking and screaming already!

I like DVDs for so very many reasons - storage, being more durable than tapes, better picture - but I STILL want my VCR!

I want to tape silly shows and whiz past the commetcials without needing to subscribe to Tivo. A junk tape works just fine for that. [hubby Trey can record his Sat. morning cartoons and compress their 6 hours of taping time to 2 hours of watching.] I can tape 'the Boondocks' and giggle over it the same way. It's simple and convenient.

But I can see the dark conspiracies in the shadows - and why they want to eliminate VCRs - and I don't likes them [hissssss]

Considered a DVD recorder?

I've purchased a DVD-recorder recently and I'm having a great time with it. Get a rewritable DVD and that becomes your scratch tape. Get a spindle of DVD Rs (use whichever format is appropriate) and those are the tapes you record and keep. (There's probably a way to get it to skip the commercials, but I haven't found it yet). The only problem is that I can't record the recent commercial tapes to get the movie onto DVD. (But then I can't do that with a VCR either!)

I know, I know, you're a Luddite. But perhaps it's time to be dragged kicking and screaming into the full possibility of the DVD.

I wish I could trade all my VHS movies for DVDs! They're so much better, and you get all the extra things that would never fit on a tape. Plus, they take up a lot less room on the shelf. (^-^)

Good luck on the Christmas shopping!

Why not get her a new combo DVD/VCR player in addition to the movie?

Luddite, remember? Worse than me.

She has an Admiral TV that is more than 20 years old and that she will not replace because it matches the decor of her living room.

She has a VCR that is almost 10 years old that she has NO idea how it works [other than tape goes in here, push this to start/stop] - and any adjustment to both IT and the TV are demanded of Trey when we go 'down to So.Cal' 2x year. But she will not allow it to be replaced as long as it works.

I've asked - offered to get her a new VCR, DVD player [or combination of the pair].

Of course, far be it for me to complain about someone -else- being stubborn - but .... maybe I can see where I get it from
