new game obsession
Feb. 22nd, 2006 07:20 pmAm recovering from the head cold & hope my voice will be back to normal by the weekend [for refereeing both days]. And am now playing 'Knights of the Old Republic', trying for a complete lightside PC and a darksider. The game is a TON of fun.
However, I have a serious case of WTF-itis about the backstory there. OK, so this is supposed to be 4,000 years befor the events in the film. Huh? Makes no sense. This would assume there has been no effective change in fashion, tech, ships or most of ANYthing that whole time. Plus the galactic civ is supposed to be thousands of years old -then-. Now _I_ can get away with this silliness in Gaea because of magic & the fantasy rpg setting. 'Star Wars' is supposed to be sf. Now if they said it was _400_ years, I could believe it a lot more. But we are talking MAJOR suspension of disbelief here.
Even with the WTF back-story, it's still a lot of fun to play.

Date: 2006-02-23 04:27 pm (UTC)I found being a lightsider more satisfying in the end, but playing a darksider has the added advantage of getting to do one of the most evil things I have ever done in a video game. (And no, I am not going to tell you what it is. You will figure it out when you get there. If you don't by the time you finish as a darksider, ask me :) The other characters also make fun comments as you start going more and more evil and it starts reflecting in your appearance.
When you are done, I have KOTOR2 if you want to play it. Also lots of fun, a few systemic improvements, however, the ending was WEAK. I understand the reasons (LucasArts gave the company exactly a year to create the game, so they didn't have enough time to get everything in there that they wanted to) but still, as a follow up to KOTOR, it was a tidge disappointing.

Date: 2006-02-23 05:48 pm (UTC)But in 200 years the entire universe's timeline is instantly moved forward 3600 years with the only net effect being everybody knows they were shifted forward 3600 years. So they know the republic is now thousands of years old, but have done very little...
Never mind, they screwed up.

Date: 2006-02-23 10:38 pm (UTC)One thing that makes it difficult to want to play lightsider is the character portraits. Can they -possibly- look more like they've been stuck on sticks? I mean, the initial posture is okay, but boy do they get priggish-looking.
And there's a romance with Bastila? Kind of 'ew'. So I guess there's no chance to do naughty things to Carth if playing a girl? And ... where do you get the patch? ^_^

Date: 2006-02-23 10:48 pm (UTC)The character portraits are just FUNNY - standing in that column of light, nose in the air? How can you not love it? :)
There is a romance option with Carth as a girl - I did it without even having to look at a FAQ :) It takes a while, but you can draw him out. I actualy really liked his romance option. There is one other character that you can have a romance with (as a female) but again, it is more fun to discover that one yourself *grins evilly* *taunts the Melchar*.
The dark side powers are more fun, hands down. I mean, come on, Force Lightning! (And man can you have some serious fun with that power in the sequel...)
I ended up going soldier with both of mine because I REALLY REALLY wanted to dual weild light sabers. Besides, Force Jump is just FUN! Wheeeee!
Ok. Better now. As far as where to get patches, check out http://www.pcgamemods.com/user/3458.html. There are approximately a ZILLION mods there, and some of them are even really cool. Some of them are game breakingly powerful (yay!). The Bastila romance one you would need to start a new game for - you can't install it and have it affect an existing game - it makes things go... funny.
You are not THINKING....
