I feel like I've been wrestling [my arms and shoulders are so sore]. Making fruitcakes = hard work.

But this recipe makes such a good fruitcake! Flour, spices, nuts, applesauce, dried fruit [nothing candied], brandy and a lot of stirring of the heavy batter. This makes 4 fruitcakes that, having been baked, are wrapped in cheesecloth, coaked in brandy and allowed to season for at least a week [although a month is better].

One will go to my mom [since she asked for one], another probably to Trey's mom.

Whew! Now will I do the honey cakes next? [another wonderful recipe lumped in as 'fruitcake'] ... Maybe on Monday.

"Something's in the mix ...
Something's in the mix ...
Melchar's in the kitchen, up to her old tricks.

"She's locked away up there, stirring up a storm ...
Greasing up the pans, the oven's nice and warm.

MAKING FRUIT CAKE! ...
(You know the rest)

"Recipes are buzzing through my brain,
Goodies fit to drive a girl insane.
Cakes and cookies that I love to eat!
All my friends tell me they can't be beat.
Time to rustle up another batch,
As my hubby shoves them 'down the hatch'.

Something's here that quite upsetting,
Something that I keep forgetting,
Like some milk whose date is past.
Just because I choose to treat them, doesn't mean I have to eat them!

... all fruitcakes use nuts, apparently. And the ones I've seen are about as unappetizing as I can imagine. I've been told some fruitcakes are good.

I saw this comment and wanted to tell you that I have a recipe for fruitcake bars, which are close to regular fruitcake, without nuts, but it uses candied fruit in a non chocolate brownie base.

I add nuts to my fruitcakes for texture and taste. When you make your own fruitcake though, nuts are completely optional. If you'd like, I can email you the 2 recipes I'm using. The ingredients are a bit pricey, but the result is quite nice [my opinion of course]. ... and can be given as holiday gifts, as well as enjoyed by the family.

[Part of what I'm making will be gifts, requested by my mom, mom-in-law & sister-in-law; whereas an aunt has requested cookies. ... Which is all a lot more work than just going and buying them stuff. ^_^]

Oh my, I have been fantasizing about making a fruitcake for years, but never got around to it making it a reality. I don't suppone you'd like to share your recipe? E-mail, dear.
