I make a very nice fruitcake with dried fruit [not candied] and brandy. Today was the 'take off the cheesecloth, wrap in fresh cheesecloth' day and since I'd had the suggestion last year, I cut the 2 mondo cakes into (8) 1-lb cakes and re-wrapped each separately.

Had a nibble of one. Already yummy. Hmmm, not all have been assigned homes that they go to for xmas yet ^_^

At the end of an episode of California Heartland you can see me saying "Oooh, I LOVE fruitcake!" It's quite amusing, because it comes at the end of a montage of the reporter offering fruitcake to several people who cringe and pull away. What's wrong with those people?!

There are some nasty ones that are heavy on citron. But there are -wonderful- ones. I have 3 recipes that are as different as can be - and all delicious.

I speculate that the slam on fruitcake has people shying away from them. You ask, 'would you like to sample some Ukranian honey cake?' Or 'want a bit of organic fruit gingerbread?' and you'll get trampled. IMO the word 'fruitcake' has been badly villified.
